The beginning of each year is filled with expectations. It is a time to reflect on how far we’ve come and to set goals for our next steps. It’s a time we often select New Year’s resolutions and set lofty goals. Setting goals is an essential component to achieving success. Setting unrealistic and unattainable goals can cause anxiety and unnecessary stress. Goals should provide a clear road-map to achieving success. One way to set clear goals is to use the SMART goal model. The SMART goal model will help to focus efforts by outlining measurable and realistic steps.
The acronym SMART stands for specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and timely.
- Specific – What goal do I want to achieve? Why is this goal important? When do I want to achieve the goal?
- Measurable – How much/many? How will I know the goal has been achieved?
- Attainable – How can I achieve the goal? What resources do I have?
- Relevant – Is the goal meaningful? Is this the right time? Can I commit to the goal?
- Timely – What is the deadline to complete the goal? Can I achieve this goal in a realistic time frame?
Goal setting is a critical component in the recovery process. Using the SMART goal model will provide focus, motivation, and direction. Goal setting serves as a vehicle for gaining self-awareness. In recovery, self-awareness is essential. A self-aware person will be able to identify their strengths and develop confidence. Confidence cultivates optimism and hope-which are needed to overcome obstacles.
The beginning of the year is a good time to look towards the future and set goals. The key to achieving success is setting goals that provide a clear road map. Setting lofty goals can cause anxiety, frustration, and create stress. Setting SMART goals will provide the framework needed to achieve success. Be specific, set milestones, understand what it takes to attain the goal, be honest with yourself about the goal’s relevance, and be realistic concerning deadlines.
Happy New Year!
