There are a multitude of mind and mood-altering substances available in central Indiana, both legally and illegally. By far, the three most commonly used substances across all demographic groups are alcohol, cannabis (marijuana), and nicotine.

Alcohol and nicotine are each recreationally legal for adults, and illegal for adolescents. Cannabis (aside from certain loosely regulated low or no-THC products) is still an illegal substance in Indiana for all ages.

Thousands of individuals, perhaps yourself included, use these substances on a regular basis. Despite the relative social acceptability of these three, each of them is still highly addictive and each alters the mind or mood. For many, the alterative effects are precisely the reason for use – often to avoid/relieve stress or escape trauma.

How do you know when your or another person’s substance use should cause concern? Here are 4 common “red flags” to be aware of:

  • Physical flags– such as sudden weight gain or loss, shakiness, poorer hygiene, or frequent illness (weakened immune system).
  • Emotional flags – such as increased depression or anxiety, memory problems, confusion, or defensiveness (especially when confronted about the substance).
  • Behavioral flags – such as increased secrecy, avoidance of loved ones, neglecting responsibilities like work or school, or risk-taking (like driving while under the influence).
  • Financial flags – such as unexplained expenses, selling possessions unnecessarily, gambling, or missing payments on important bills.

This is by no means an exhaustive or universal list. However, these red flags are quite common. If you recognize any of these flags in yourself or in someone you know, the sooner you choose to address it the better. There is help and hope! Give The Willow Center a call today.
